I am quite excited about this new musical journey of composing songs for kids and parents. It's been an incredible ride so far and I don't know where this is going but I don't care, because I am having a blast!
I have been writing songs since the 10th grade (a love song for my first girlfriend) and have probably written close to 70 songs in all different styles and genres. I have had the pleasure and the honor of working with some of the most talented singers and musicians throughout my musical career, some have become great friends.
I have to thank God for putting me a the right place at the right time. I am in "the perfect storm". I am blessed to be working in an amazing school as an instrumental music teacher. Not only do the teachers inspire me, but the students warm my heart with their compassion and amazing talent. The recording studio (HCA Studios) has allowed me to be creative on my free time at school. The school has been like a petri dish, a few small ideas flourishing into a plethora of creations! I have access to guitars, keyboards, drums, thousands of professionally sampled sounds, professional microphones, and powerful recording software!
The studio at school and at home (Sound Engine Studios) have given me the "tools" to write songs, but my inspiration really stems from my wife Diana and my three boys Matt, Zach, and Noah. I started writing children's songs singing my boys to sleep with a ukelele that my mother (Mima) bought for them. The ideas kept coming. I was also given a bunch of great ideas from friends and family on Facebook too, all adding to the integrity of the collection.
For this Young Children's Song Series, I asked a few of high-school student to help out with some of the recordings. The first thing I wanted to do was experiment with voices other than my own on some of the songs.
I asked Tahsha Keith, a Senior at Hawthorne Christian Academy, to try to sing "No Monsters In My Room". But it was like Peanut butter and Jelly, a brilliant combination. And then Tahsha performed "Just The Same", "My Hands", and "My Number One". Tahsha is currently working on a vocal part to the final song in the collection, a lullaby. The lullaby was going to be instrumental only, but after listening to Tahsha's vocal ideas, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have her perform on another song!
The only song that still needs to be recorded is "My Bluesy Kind Of Day". I wrote a very basic bluesy/jazz type of song on the piano and came up with lyrics. I asked a talented pianist and high school senior Philip Kline to embellish the piece with his creative ideas. It was like turning a bowl of corn flakes into a full all-you-can-eat, breakfast buffet!
When all is said and done, I should have 9 songs in this collection, which includes 2 funny parenting songs! I will be posting up a few songs on YouTube to see what the response is and I will also be putting some songs up for purchase for instant download.
Will there be more songs? I don't know, I hope so. I was out at Mima's house for Easter Break and I doodled another parenting song called "Always On'. No promises though. Either way, it's been fun. And I do look forward to more good times and continued connections with great people like you!
